About the Recipe

Ingredients
Filling:
8 oz dried apples
3 C water
1/2 C sugar (white)
1/2 C sugar (brown)
3 TBSP butter or margarine
1/2 Tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 Tsp nutmeg
1/2 Tsp salt
Crust:
4 C all purpose flour
1 C shortening
1 Tsp salt
1 C water
Preparation
Filling:
Submerge dried apples in water and cook on top of the stove over medium heat for 20 minutes or until water is almost fully absorbed Add the remaining filling ingredients and continue to cook another 10 minutes while mixing and mashing the apples until they look like pie filling. Set aside and let cool.
Crust:
Mix shortening into flour until it forms the texture of coarse crumbs. Add salt. Start adding water a little at a time until a dough forms. Flour your surface and roll dough into 1/4 in thick piece. Cut dough into 6 inch circles.
Fill each circle with 2 heaping TBSP of filling. Wet the edges of the circle with some water on your fingers. Fold over and seal. Use a fork to crimp the edges of the pies together.
Cook:
Fill your skillet about 1/2 in with cookin oil
Fry pies until a golden brown on each side.
Remove and place on paper towels to soak up the extra moisture. Sprinkle with powdered sugar or cinnamon and sugar
